While some banks are announcing plans to add monthly fees for using debit cards, one bank has announced plans to cancel their fee. Wells Fargo had plans to charge $3 per month for using debit card, but cancelled plans after customers in a five-state pilot program, including Oregon, opposed the charge.

Veterans Court celebrates one year anniversary
The Klamath County Veterans' Court will celebrate it's one year anniversary with a ceremony November 8 at 1:30pm p.m. in the Court of Klamath County Circuit Court Judge Marci Adkisson, who oversees the court. The ceremony will highlight the early success of Veterans' Court and emphasize how Klamath County supports the veterans that have served and recognize how the stress factors of their service can affect their lives and loved ones. The Veterans' Administration from White City will also be recognized.
Klamath Falls man sentenced for kidnapping
40-year old Henry Lawrence Roberson of Klamath Falls has been sentenced to 70 months in prison on two counts of Kidnapping in the Second Degree, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Assault in the Fourth Degree. The crime happened in July, and DA Ed Caleb says Roberson also plead guilty to the crimes of Unlawful Delivery of Marijuana for Consideration and two more counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and was sentenced to 45 months.
Christmas Tree permits on sale
Christmas tree permits on the Klamath National Forest are now for sale at all forest offices. The price for each permit is $10.00 per household, and one person may purchase Christmas tree permits for up to five households. You can get the Christmas tree permits at the Klamath National Forest Supervisor's Office at 1312 Fairlane Road in Yreka. That office moves to a new location December 7, and that's 1711 South Main next to the California Highway Patrol building in Yreka.

Drug Take Back event Saturday
Klamath Falls police are hosting a drug take back event tomorrow to accept unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The drugs can be dropped off at police department headquarters at 2501 Shasta Way from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m
OIT scam turns out to be legal
Earlier this week we told you of a possible scam at OIT involving someone selling advertising for a basketball publication. It turns out that was legitimate. Klamath Falls police found out the person was actually seeking advertising for a publication of the Cascade Collegiate Conference, of which OIT is a member. The individual didn't mention the conference in his pitches and OIT wasn't notified. So OIT said although it may have been legal, it wasn't properly handled.
Crater Lake road to close for the season
Tuesday is November 1, and that means Crater Lake National Park’s Rim Drive and the North Entrance road at Crater Lake will close for the season. Right now the roads are snow free, but park spokeswoman Marcia McCabe said the closures give park maintenance crews a chance to complete winter preparations before the heavy snows arrive. The west and south entrances to the park on Highway 62 will say open, but you won’t be able to enter or exit the park from Highway 138 after Monday.
Fallen officer to be honored
The state has decided to add the names of two officers to the Oregon Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Memorial during the state's annual ceremony on May 8, 2012. One of those is Deputy J.F. Lewis of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Lewis was killed in a gunfight while guarding a prisoner in Klamath Falls when a group of masked men attempted to take the prisoner from his custody on March 11, 1882. Klamath Falls was called Linkville back then.

State Troopers to crack down on impaired Halloween drivers
With Halloween Monday, it may be a weekend for parties, and that has Oregon law enforcement agencies ready to target drunk drivers. State police say Halloween night can be one of the deadliest. Last year on Halloween, 48 percent of al highway fatalities across the nation involved a driver with a B-A-C of .08 or higher. Officers will be watching.

Chemical weapons destroyed
The Umatilla Chemical Depot in Hermiston was a stockpile of chemical weapons that once stored 12 percent of the United States' supply, including deadly VX nerve agent and blistering mustard agent. The stockpile was destroyed this week, and comes in under a 2012 deadline set by a 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention.
Property taxes up while values are down
Perhaps you've received your property tax statement in the mail this week. If not, you'll be getting it soon. Overall, property tax revenue in Klamath County seems to be increasing, while property values are decreasing. Because Oregon assesses property taxes on the lower of the assessed or real market value, some property owners can pay more in taxes even though the property value has fallen. Many property owners are seeing three percent increases.
Meeting Tuesday to discuss City Council Ward boundaries
The City of Klamath Falls will host a town hall meeting on Tuesday, November 1, at 5:15 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to discuss proposed adjustments to the City Council ward boundaries. The boundaries need to be adjusted because of population changes based on last year's census. The meeting will provide information about the rules regarding boundary adjustments and the process used by City staff to create the current proposal. Opinions are welcome and encouraged.

OIT warns of scam
School officials from OIT are warning of a scam. Someone calling himself Ryan Daily is calling people around Klamath Falls, claiming to sell advertising to an Oregon Tech basketball publication. OIT says the publication doesn't exist.
State police seize marijuana during traffic stop
A traffic stop by state police last week on Highway 395 north of Lakeview in Lake County led to the discovery of 8 pounds of marijuana inside a man's van. 32-year old Jack David Sayler from Caldwell, Idaho was arrested and taken to Lake County jail. Estimated value of the seized marijuana was $20,000, according to Oregon State Police.
Chance to dispose of prescription drugs Saturday
This Saturday is a Drug Take Back Day, and the Klamath Falls police department will provide a venue for anyone wanting to drop of expired, unwanted, and unused prescription medication. The drugs can be dropped off at the Police Department at 2501 Shasta Way Saturday between 10am and 2pm. In drug take back events so far this year across the country, 309 tons of pills have been collected and will be properly disposed of.

Jobless rate doesn't budge
The jobless rate in Klamath County didn't move in September, holding steady from August at 12.9 percent. Klamath County added 230 jobs between August and September, but lost 40 private sector jobs. The biggest spike in jobs came in local education, which stands to reason since public schools opened in September. The county added 300 jobs there.
Veteran's Day Parade one of several events planned
This year's Veteran's Day parade will be on Friday, November 11th at 10am, and it's scheduled to move down Main Street ending at Veteran's Memorial Park. The event is sponsored by Klamath Falls City Parks and the local Disabled American Veterans Chapter 12. A VFW sponsored ceremony at the Veteran's Memorial in Veteran's Park will follow the parade, then the Crater Lake Council of Boy Scouts will perform a Flag Retirement Ceremony.

Veteran's Day activities planned
In addition to the Veterans Day Parade at 10am November 11, many of the local veterans' organizations will open their doors for open house to all veterans and the general public beginning at noon. That includes VFW Post 1383, 515 Klamath Ave. They'll have a Free chili feed at noon. Marine Corps League (Leatherneck Club), 1019 Main Street, will serve Free Spaghetti at noon. American Legion Post 8, 228 N. 8th Street, will serve a free pancake breakfast from 8 am to 11 am and a free stew feed at noon.
Property tax statements go out
The Tax Collector's office has issued a clarification to something that ran in the Herald and News recently. It said property owners have until November 15 to pay their tax bill to receive a 3 percent discount, and tax bills are due by June 30 of 2012. The Tax Collector's office says payments must be delivered or postmarked by November 15 to receive the discount, and the full discount only applies to full payments. A two-thirds payment receives a 2 percent discount, and there is no discount on one-third payments. Property tax statements are being mailed today.
Signal work will close turn lanes Wednesday
Left turn signals are being upgraded today at South 6th St. and Shasta Way, and that means the left turn lanes will be closed off and on until 10am. As work continues tomorrow, both left hand turn lanes on South 6th and Shasta Way will be completely closed from 8am to noon. Alternate routes will include Lark St., East Main, and Martin Street.

Vandals damage computer at Veterans Memorial Park
Vandals damaged the computer for the memorial at Veterans Memorial Park Thursday night or Friday morning, and the mayor is asking for donors to contribute to the reward fund for information leading to an arrest. Someone smashed the computer with a hard object, and police are investigating. The computer is used by visitors to locate bricks dedicated to Veterans, and would cost $2500 to fix. If it can't be fixed it would cost $20,000 to replace.

Performer falls at Ross Ragland Theater
A performer at the Ross Ragland theater Saturday night fell about 9 feet Saturday night and was taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center. Suzanne Kenney from Pendulum Aerial Arts fell from a cloth ribbon during the performance, which ended abruptly after the fall. About 400 people were in the audience at the time. Kenney is expected to be okay and has been released from the hospital.
Local fire administrator receives accreditation
Kim Probst of Klamath County Fire District No 1 has received her Accreditation from the state Fire Service Office Administrators. That's an optional program for self-improvement on the fire administration staff, that includes 156 hours of comprehensive course work in categories including office management and interpersonal dynamics.
VFW Hall to host Halloween party
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary is having a Halloween dinner and costume party at the VFW Hall on Oct. 28th. Dinner will be served between 6pm and 7pm and a costume contest will follow for best dressed. Anyone can attend and watch Klamath Idol winner, Randy Wagner perform at 8pm.

Joint Public Safety Committee looks at boundaries
The most recent meeting of the Joint Public Safety Advisory Committee included Police Chief Jim Hunter, who showed a map of the boundary between Klamath Falls and the sout suburban, or unincorporated area. There are 20,000 people in the Urban Growth Area and 22,000 in the unincorporated area. The committee is looking at ways to manage that. Right now the Klamath County Sheriff's office provides 19 deputies and city police provide 38.
State police looking for help in illegal hunting case
State police continue to investigate poaching incidents and ask for the public's help in the case of a bull elk that was shot and left to waste October 4th. It happened in Lane County in the Carpet Hill/Tire Mountain area. A $500 reward is offered.

Man allegedly stabbed by own son
A man was stabbed in the back yesterday morning at their Dairy-area home, allegedly by his own son. 50-year old Donald Gale Boltz Jr has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing his father, David Boltz Sr in the back. A motive hasn't been determined.
Hearing on dam removal draws a crowd
A hearing over the the environmental impact study of hydroelectric dam removal drew eighty people wanting to comment. Those who shared opinions were largely opposed, sayingthe loss in real estate and tax values from the removal of dams and impacts to the ecosystem from released sediment, outweigh the benefits. Supporters said removal can help fix an ailing river, and create jobs.
BBQ briquettes get blame for fire
Klamath County fire officials remind us they'll pick up 2 bags of yard debris every week on the normally scheduled garbage day for no additional fee. And the local landfill is offering free year debris disposal day November 5th. The reminders come after a fire early Wednesday was found to have started from discarded briquettes from a BBQ too close to a debris pile. The fire burned a detached garage on Orchard Avenue.
Flu shots urged by health officials
Health officials have been urging flu shots for at least a month to give the body time to build up antibodies before the season peaks. Flu season isn't in full swing yet and Oregon has its first confirmed case of influenza. The vaccines are widely available at physicians offices and pharmacies, and anyone 6 months of age and up is urged to get one.

Man with Klamath Falls history dies in Montana
A Billings Montana shooting October 13th is connected to Klamath Falls. 35-year old Timothy Patrick died after being confronted by a police officer after being spotted near a stolen vehicle. Multiple shots were fired, but investigators have said Patrick may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Patrick had a robbery conviction in Klamath County in 2005, and has family and friends in the Basin.

Money is set aside for wastewater upgrades
Upgrades are coming to the local wastewater treatment facility. The Klamath Falls City Council has approved a $14.5 million revolving loan and $1 million grant from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality that will fund the work. The upgrades are necessary to comply with federal EPA standards.
Prison sentence handed down for drug incident
Klamath County Circuit Court Judge Dan Bunch sentenced 35-year old Kelly Martin Freer this week to 40 months in prison for two counts of delivery of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine after an incident in May 2010. Freer was originally assigned to drug court but was not able to make necessary progress in following drug court conditions, according to the district attorney's office.

Wynn rejects plea deal
A plea deal was offered to Michael Scott Wynn that would have had him pleading guilty by mental disease and defect after setting fire to a county building in February. The deal was rejected. Wynn wants to leave the Klamath County Jail and stay in a private residence until his case goes to trial, but the judge wants more time to make a decision.
Woman allegedly steals from employer
52-year old Peggy Frances Mayberry of Klamath Falls has been arrested for stealing from her employer. Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb says Mayberry faces ten counts of first degree theft. To be charged with first degree theft, a person must allegedly steal something worth $1000.
Mental evaluation in the works for Alturas man
A man arrested earlier this month for firing shots from a rifle in his front yard will undergo a mental evaluation. 55-year old Ronnie Harden of Alturas faces charges, but hasn't been formally arraigned. There was a four-hour standoff with officers after the shots were fired, but officers eventually entered the home and arrested him. The case will be on hold until the mental evaluation is completed.
Hydroelectric project to break ground soon
A proposed hydroelectric project could get its start soon. The Klamath Irrigation District could break ground by the end of the month after the US Bureau of Reclamation issued its final environmental assessment yesterday and found no significant impact. Once the final paperwork is finished and the canals are drained, construction will begin. The facility is expected to be completed by next irrigation season.

For the first time in the department's history, Oregon State police are taking exclusively electronic applications for new troopers. There has not been an open chance to apply for a State Trooper position since March of 2010, but they'll take applications beginning October 25. They'll limit the application pool to the first 800, so they have a manageable number to pick from.

Accused arsonist back in jail, but medical issue persists
Michael Scott Wynn is the man accused of setting fire to the Klamath County Mental Health building in February, and has been undergoing a mental evaluation for the past four months. He's back in jail now with an undisclosed medical problem. The Klamath County Sheriffs office says he's on medication, but could need hospitalization. In that case he would be on 24-hour surveillance at Sky Lakes Medical Center.
Fewer youth expected in local prisons in next decade
The Oregon Office of Economic Analysis issued the Oregon Youth Authority Demand Forecast Friday, which projects the number of prison beds needed because of youth offenses. They've projected a lower level of demand for services over the next decade, as compared to the prior forecast, thanks to reductions in juvenile crime trends. The forecast says 883 beds are currently needed across the state, increasing to 916 by 2021.
Walden throws support behind Romney
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has announced Oregon Congressman Greg Walden is supporting his campaign. Walden said in a statement, although he would not normally wade into a primary, but these are not normal times, and Governor Romney is the person he believes is best qualified to run, win, and govern effectively.

Members of the Joint Public Safety Advisory Committee are now drawing a picture of what, ideally, Law Enforcement would look like in Klamath County if there were resources available. According to input at a meeting last Thursday, that would include having all three pods open at the Klamath County jail. Currently there are two. Consensus also called for more patrols in rural areas, while managing urban growth. Meetings are every Thursday from 3 to 5 and the public is welcome to attend.

City Council meets today, various items on the agenda
On the agenda for today's Klamath Falls City Council meeting, an ordiance that would establish a downtown advisory committee. Also, city code relating to fences may be amended, and city code related to door-to-door solicitaions. A resolution that amends the financial policies for the city of Klamath Falls may be amended to add an anti-fraud and theft police. The meeting is tonight at 7pm.

Moore's cause of death confirmed
An autopsy has confirmed the cause of death of William Dean Moore, the Klamath County Jail inmate found dead in his cell earlier this week. District Attorney Ed Caleb confirmed the initial finding that it was suicide. Moore had been accused of shooting and killing Lynda Dunham as she stood on her parents' front porch near Chiloquin in early August.
Woman jailed after allegedly stealing pizza delivery car
33-year old Carla Marie Barkley was arrested this week after allegedly stealing and crashing a pizza delivery woman's car. While the victim was delivering a pizza on Lincoln Street, Barkley allegedly drove the car through several downtown streets before losing control. DUI and unauthorized use of a vehicle are on the list of charges. She was booked into the Klamath County Jail in lieu of $57,500 bail.
Gems add Assistant GM
The Klamath Falls Gems organization has expanded. The group has announced the addition of Dan Heeman to the Gems' full-time staff as Assistant General Manager. Heeman joins the team after three years on the operations staff of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox at the Camelback Ranch spring training facility in Glendale, Arizona. Heeman is the son of Gems General Manager Chuck Heeman and Director of Sales and Ticketing Mayra Heeman.

School district will have to pick and choose on renovations
If all the necessary repairs and renovations were to come to Klamath Falls City Schools, the price tag would be around $43 million. Since that's a pretty lofty goal in a tough budget climate, the long-range planning committee is looking at which renovations will give students the best boost, without putting a big cost burden on the district. The committee has several meetings planned between now and January.
Lakeview Biomass plant on hold
Construction of a Lakeview biomass project is on hold. The Portland based company that had been building the biomass facility in Lakeview, told members of the Lakeview Stewardship Group yesterday that construction has stopped pending a long-term power agreement. Because of a struggling economy, Iberdrola Renewables has decided not to build more projects without a long-term agreement to sell the output, according to a news release.

Controlled burn expected at Moore Park
The City of Klamath Falls along with the Oregon Department of Forestry, will conduct pile burning on 40 acres in Moore Park this fall. This helps reduce the risk of wildfire in Moore Park and to adjacent residential areas. All burning will be done when conditions are right, and in coordination with air quality officials to improve smoke dispersion.

You can burn yard waste like trees and leaves between 8am and 5pm, as long as the wind speed is not greater than 10mph. Reward has increased in poaching incident
State police are looking for help as they look for those behind a recent poaching incident. Someone illegally dumped five antelope carcasses northwest of Sutherline in Douglas County. The carcasses were discovered September 29th. Total rewards offered are at $3000.

More join the Food Stamp program
More people are using the Oregon Trail Card now. The Oregon Department of Human Services reports there's been a nearly ten percent increase in people using the food stamp system when comparing last month to September of last year. Officials say the growing number of people utilizing the Oregon trail card signals that our state is still in an economic crisis.
Charter students may get new opportunities to play sports
Eagle Ridge High School is a charter school with 180 students enrolled. Those students aren't currently playing sports because they're not big enough to sustain their own teams, and they aren't allowed to play on teams at Klamath Union High School. But that may change. New rules are being considered that would allow students at alternative schools within the district to play sports.
Drug sentence has teen serving 18 months
19-year old Eduardo Segura has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison for his role in delivering methamphetamine to a Klamath Falls residents. Segura was one of three arrested in mid-September after state police pulled over a vehicle on Highway 66 and found meth and guns inside. Segura told officers he made deliveries for a man named Nene, and followed instructions from him about where to take the drugs.
Autopsy to determine what killed Klamath County jail inmate
Autopsy results are pending, and that will help determine a cause of death William Dean Moore. Moore was found dead yesterday morning at the Klamath county jail, in his cell. Moore was charged with murder after officials say he shot Lynda Dunham while she was standing on the porch of her parents' home 10 miles east of Chiloquin in early August. The Klamath County sheriff's office has requested an outside agency investigate the death of Moore, although an internal policy review will be conducted.
Overpayments to be collected by Retirement System
The Public Employees Retirement System is about ready to start collecting millions of dollars in overpayments sent to retirees in Oregon, after a Supreme Court ruling last week allowed them to move forward. The issue dates back to a period from 2000 to 2004, when there was an overestimate of investment returns.

Two in the race for Sheriff so far
With Sheriff Tim Evinger not seeking re-election the field is wide open, and two candidates have filed so far. Klamath Falls resident Carl Adrian Pfeiffer is a private security provider and entrepreneur who joins former deputy and owner of the outdoor store The Ledge, Mike Angeli, in the race.

Gas prices expected to rise
The national average for regular unleaded gasoline is 3.42, down 13 cents in the past two weeks. The west is still paying some of the highest prices in the nation, with the lowest price reported on gasbuddy.com in the last 24 hours in Klamath Falls at $3.83. That's at the Albertsons on S. 6th and Homedale. Prices are expected to start climbing again in the coming weeks.
Murder case leads police to new clues
The two people suspected of murdering Oregon's Cody Myers are still in custody in California, and now they've been linked to another murder there. Oregon State police say David Joseph Pedersen and Holly Ann Grigsby have been linked to the death of a 53-year old Eureka, California man, who died from a gunshot wound to the head. The two suspects have also been linked to a death in Everett, Washington. Their bail has been set at $1 million while several law enforcement agencies continue to put together the pieces.
Borders customers can opt out of information sharing
The Federal Trade Commission has issued a letter expressing disapproval that Barnes N Noble is buying customer information from Borders, as Borders goes out of business. The FTC says Borders had promised not to sell the information. Borders customers can opt out of the information swap, but they have to do so by October 15th.

The Joint Public Safety Advisory Committee has agreed to make the Klamath County Jail the number one priority. Current funding is stable through June of 2012, but after that a new plan will need to be in place. A paid facilitator for the committee begins work this Thursday. Information about the meetings is available on www.klamathonline.com, and the public is invited to attend the Thursday meetings at the Klamath County government center.

Man suffers accidental gunshot wound to the chest
A woman from Sprague River allegedly shot her boyfriend in the chest Friday night, and she's been charged with attempted murder. The Klamath County Sheriff's office said in a release 38-year old Michael Schmidt sustained an accidental gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center in serious condition. 50-year old Anita Marie Masaitis has been charged in the case, and police continue to wait on a statement from Schmidt .
Changes could come to snow and ice removal policy
Winter snows aren't far away, and this winter you may notice changes to the snow removal policy in Klamath Falls. City Council has proposed changes that would make property owners have snow and ice removed from sidewalks by noon. Snow would have to be scooped back into the yard too, not out on the street. These and other changes will be part of a public hearing at the next City Council meeting, Oct. 17.
County looks for interim treasurer
Klamath County treasurer Mike Long is scheduled to leave office this Saturday, and the county is looking for a part-time treasurer to take over until a permanent new one is found. The position would be up for election in 2012. The treasurer keeps track of the county's investments, which means managing a portfolio worth about $150 million.
Underage driver stopped for attempting to elude
A 15-year old Washington boy was taken into custoy by state police Friday morning on Interstate 5 for attempting to elude police near the Oregon- California border. Trooper had to use spike strips to get him to stop, after reaching speeds of 100 mph. California Highway Patrol initially tried to stop the vehicle north of Yreka for speeding. The attempt to elude covered about 45 miles.

The Oregon Hunter's Association is offering a $1000 reward in the case. Anyone who might have seen suspicious people in the Marvin Hill area should call police.

Klamath Basin Power Alliance needs to measure interest
The Klamath Basin Power Alliance and Klamath Water and Power Agency are in the process of negotiating acquisition of federal power for a program that would provide stability for agricultural pumping electric rates. The agency has to provide a reasonable indication of how much demand there may be, so Klamth Basin irrigators with interest should submit a form to the agency, and you can decide to participate later. The deadline is November 30th

Governor proclaims next week Fire Prevention Week
Governor Kitzhaber has proclaimed the week of October 9 through 15, Fire Prevention Week in Oregon. It's a good time to make sure your smoke alarm is in working order and practice the family escape plan, and consider installing home fire sprinklers. Oregon State Fire Marshal Mark Wallace says, "Last year, one out of every four structure fires was in a home with no smoke alarm or where a smoke alarm failed to operate."

Chemult man hurt in Highway 97 accident
State police say a Chemult-area man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle he was driving traveled off Highway 97 near the Highway 58 junction and collided with several trees. 43-year old Roy A Young was northbound on Highway 97 when he reportedly started having chest pains and took his seat belt off. As he leaned to grab something the vehicle traveled off the right shoulder, down a steep 30-foot embankment and crashed into a group of trees.
Police seek missing vehicle in Myers murder case
Detectives from Oregon and Washington are in California questioning David Joseph Pederson and Holly Ann Grigbsy about the death of Oregon's Cody Myers. Myers died from gunshot wounds to the head and chest, according to autopsy results. Investigators are still looking for the black 2010 Jeep Patriot displaying Washington license plate ABZ7996 on the rear and a red US Marine plate placard on the front. The vehicle was known to be driven by the suspects south from Everett, Washington to Oregon where it is believed to be abandoned.

State seeks missing girl
A 16-year old Oregon girl ran away with her 4-month old son, according to state police, and they state has been notified to be on the lookout. Kiah Michaels is described as a White/Female, about 5'4/120 lbs., Brown hair and Brown eyes. She was last seen at her home Wednesday. Foul play is not suspected. Anyone with information should call Klamath Falls police, and they'll forward the information to Vancouver.

Death still unexplained
The cause is still under investigation, after a man was found dead in his shop on Madison Street Sunday. Authorities haven't ruled whether he was killed or died of natural or accidental causes. 55-year old Frank Grohs had brusing on his body, according to DA Ed Caleb, and the autopsy didn't explain it. Authorities are waiting on toxicology results now. Grohs' girlfriend called 911 after she became concerned and went looking for him.
Bonanza looks at law enforcement options
Bonanza Town Council has voted to give Mayor Better Tyree the power to pursue law enforcement options. The Klamath County Sheriff's office provides limited services, but Bonanza is looking for a way to supplement that. A private security firm has already contact the town about providing the services.

Klamath County Fire District No. 1 and IAFF Local 890 personnel are wearing pink duty shirts this week in support of breast cancer awareness. The shirts are also for sale to the general public a the Klamath County Fire Dist. No. 1 offices. All proceeds go to Norma's Challenge to provide free breast cancer screening for local uninsured and low income women.
Geothermal system up and running
The geothermal leak that has plagued the Klamath County Public Works Dept for the past several days has been repaired. The geothermal system was started up yesterday, and the department says heating should be available to those who use the system as a heat source.
New ambulance comes to Klamath County
Klamath County Fire District No. 4 has a new ambulance. It replaces an older one purchased in 2006, and the fire district says it's the first one they've every purchased. They did it with funds raised by volunteers, about $100,000 worth, which included the trade in of the old ambulance.
Oregon couple arrested in California after manhunt
The wanted couple that had been the subject of a week long manhunt was taken into custody yesterday near Sacramento. David Joseph Pedersen and Holly Grigsby are suspects in the killing of Pedersen's stepmother in Everett, Wash., Sept. 28 and in the disappearance of 19-year-old Cody Myers, an Oregon jazz fan last seen Saturday on his way to a music festival. Authorities have found a body, but haven't confirmed its him. Pederson and Grigsby are in a California jail, but may be brought back to Oregon. That has yet to be determined.

Controlled burns planned this month
Fire Managers for the Fremont-Winema National Forest and Bureau of Land Management’s Lakeview District will again start prescribed burning. Controlled burns are expected throughout the month. About 70 acres of hand piles will be burned in the Lakewood Subdivision five miles south of Lake of the Woods starting today, but the actual times depend on the weather conditions. An additional 450 acres of machine and hand piles will be burned in the Mountain Lakes Subdivision five miles south of Rocky Point this month.

Hardman trial gets underway
Opening statements are expected today in the jury trial of Aaron Hardman. He has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree sodomy and three counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, involving a nine-year-old girl. If convicted of all the charges, he could face up to 175 years in prison.
Open House Saturday at the Fire Dept
Klamath County Fire District No. 1 is having a Fire Prevention Open House this Saturday, October 8 from 1 to 3pm at Station 1, at 2342 Gettle by the Dairy Queen. They'll have child car seat information, photo ops, and the opportunity to check out the fire trucks. Several other communtiy groups will be there too, like Citizens for Safe Schools and the Klamath Food Bank-Salvation Army.
Three commit to Gems roster
The Klamath Falls Gems have announced the commitment of three players to the 2012 roster, bringing the total number of commitments to 31 players. Coming to Klamath Falls are first baseman/outfielder Ben Packard of Northern Colorado, and two players from perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton - catcher Jared Deacon and infielder Greg Velazauez.

New labor notices going up at offices
A new rule takes affect November 14th that requires employers to post a notice in all places where other personnel notices are placed, that informs employees of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act. It informs employees of their rights to form a union, collectively bargain, and so forth. The rule applies to most private sector employers.
Onex completes investment in JELD-WEN
Onex Corporation has announced the completion of their investment in JELD-WEN. The total investment is $871 million. The Onex Group’s total investment of $871 million includes: $700 million of convertible preferred stock to acquire a 58% ownership stake; and a $171 million convertible note that can be redeemed within 18 months with proceeds from the sale of certain non-core assets and, if not redeemed, will convert into additional shares of convertible preferred stock. JELD-WEN completed a $460 million bond offering which helps refinance its debt.

Planning Commission to address major improvements
The Klamath Falls planning commission will discuss an appeal to the city's decision to require sidewalks, public curb ramps, and street lights as part of the improvements to the 12,000 square feet of former grocery store space for the relocation of the Veteran Affairs Medical Clinic. The area in question is at 2225 N Eldorado Boulevard. The property is currently developed with three individual structures: the Campus Drug Retail building, Abby's Pizza, and the former Campus Market Basket building. The planning commission meets Monday October 10th at 7pm in the City Council Chambers.

Airport improvements approved
The Klamath Falls City Council approved three expenditures as part of an airport improvement grant. One is for a new heavy-duty snow removal truck. The runway will also get weather information equipment, and the munitions road will get new pavement.
Solar panels going up on Police Dept. building
Eco Solar and Electric of Klamath Falls has won a $79,800 contract to install a solar facility on the top of the remodeled Klamath Falls Police Department station on Shasta Way. It's state law that all remodeled public buildings install solar panels worth 1.5 percent of the original construction contract.
Prison populations expected to continue to grow
As Klamath County continues to deal with crowding issues at the county jail, a state report shows prison populations are expected to continue to grow. The growth projected though is not as much as previously expected. The majority of prison population growth occurs from mid-2012 through 2016 and results from law changes related to property and drug crime offenders and earned time credit. Normal growth from long-term trends is also a significant contributor.
OIT basketball reunites former La Pine champs
The Lady Hustlin’ Owls open the 2011-12 campaign at Walla Walla November 5th and 6th with the home opener scheduled for November 19th against William Jessup. Former Oregon 4A State basketball champions from La Pine High School, Kassi Conditt and Maria Ramirez, have been reunited on the team. Conditt and Ramirez are both former 4A State Players of the Year with Ramirez earning the title in 2008 and Conditt in 2009. The two were instrumental in La Pine’s run to the 4A State Basketball Championship in 2008.
