Car hit after stopping for train
Oregon State police say yesterday's accident just west of the intersection of Summers Lane and the Southside Expressway happened after a vehicle rammed into another that was stopped at a railroad crossing as a train was passing through. There was a chain reaction accident with two other vehicles. There were no serious injuries, but traffic was down to one lane for about an hour.
IRS auditing Klamath County
It's time for a routine audit in Klamath County. IRS agents arrived Monday to start sorting through Klamath County documents, and look over financial records. CFO Jason Link told the Herald and News it's a normal occurence, and the last IRS audit happened about ten years ago. A report on the county won't come out for six months or so.
Fundraiser aims to replace DAV van
The local Disabled American Veterans van was totaled in an accident November 14th, and a fundraiser has just launched to help the DAV replace their van. The van was on its way to White City when it went down an embankment. Passenger Dan Reiley died as a result of his injuries. Joe Spendolini from Klamath Online is organizing the fundraising effort, along with County Commissioner Cheryl Hukill and others from the DAV. The goal is to raise $40,000 for a new van.

AQ Advisory is RED
Air quality isn't good this morning. The Air Quality Advisory is RED, meaning only pellet stoves may be used. Open burning is still prohibited county wide, and enforcement patrols have been out yesterday and will be out again today looking for violaters. The fine is $720.
Surplus items up for bid from Klamath National Forest
The Klamath National Forest is selling surplus federal vehicles and equipment by public Internet auction right now. Nineteen items, including trucks, SUVs, chippers and a horse trailer will be available to the highest Internet bidder. Bidding will continue until each item’s posted deadline on December 5th.

Some city fees may increase
The city planning department may increase its fees, and the Klamath Falls City Council is split so far on whether it should allow the hike for 20 services. Three new services for-a-fee would also be added. The current fees haven't been changed in about a decade, and don't cover the cost of staff processing permits, writing staff reports, and doing other footwork, according to Community Development Director Sandra Fox.
State Park admission at a discount now
December is "stocking stuffer" month at Oregon State Parks. That means from December 1 through December 31, parkgoers can save $5 on the state park 12-month day-use parking permit. The permit is required at 26 Oregon state parks, and is on sale for $25 for the month of December, regularly $30.

Gems sign more players
The Klamath Falls Gems have signed four more players and a fourth member of the coaching staff for the 2012 season. Assistant Coach Kurt Lupinski, pitchers Brian Murphy (UC Santa Barbara), Issac Henslee and Christian Bannister (Mt. Hood CC), as well as outfielder Devyn Bolasky (UC Riverside) will join the Gems next summer. The season will begin June 1 against the Bend Elks.

OIT basketball coach recognized for wins
Head basketball coach at OIT, Dan Miles, lead the active NAIA wins list entering this season. Miles is in his 41st season with the men's team, and started the season with 937 career victories, a total that ranks second-highest among men’s coaches all-time at either the NAIA or NCAA levels. With an 8-1 record so far on the season, Miles now has 945 wins and counting. With a .713 winning percentage in more than 1,300 career games, he's in the conversation wit notable NCAA coaches like Bob Knight of Indiana, and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke.
Watch for Black Ice this week
Snow may not be a problem this week, but black ice may be. The Oregon Dept of Transportation urges caution along stretches of Highway 97 and Highway 140, particularly on higher elevations portions. Black ice can be difficult to spot, so the best thing to do is take it slow and be prepared.

Judge steps away from dam case
A federal judge takes himself off the case regarding hydroelectric dams. US District Judge James Redden has rejected three different federal government plans for balancing wild salmon against Columbia Basin hydroelectric dams. He's given no official reason why he's recusing himself. He's 82 and has had a reduced work load for quite some time. The new judge is expected to follow the road map laid out by Redden.

Stolen laptops are a growing problem at libraries and on college campuses. Police advise if you're using a laptop in a public area, don't use autofill that remembers passwords, and get an anti-theft cable lock. Seasonal Traffic restrictions in place at Fremont Winema Forest
The Fremont-Winema National Forests are implementing seasonal traffic restrictions for Forest Service roads in Klamath County that are designated as snowmobile trails, and it's in effect through April 30, 2012. This limits traffic on snowmobile trails to over-snow vehicles only. An over-snow vehicle is "one that runs on tracks and/or skis, while in use over the snow.”
La Pine mother and son accused of selling marijuana
A mother and son in La Pine are facing drug charges. A drug raid at the home on Day Road late last week led to the arrest of Carmen and Travis Hall, and came after nearly a month of investigating the allegations. Detectives received information that the two were growing and selling marijuana from their home, and some sales were to minors. Evidence seized during the raid included about nine ounces of processed marijuana, 18 marijuana plants, scales, packaging material and other evidence of marijuana sales and manufacturing, according to police. Charges against Carmen Hall are pending review by the Deschutes County DA. Travis Hall will be in court today.
OIT is reaching out to rural students
Money is coming to OIT, in fact $43,000 in grant funds. The money will help low income students attend college as part of a rural outreach program. OIT will match the grant money with over $38,000 of its own money. The rural outreach program will work with students in Klamath, Lake, Baker, Crook and Union counties.
Pelican Foundation does its best to help the school district
We've mentioned the Pelican Foundation, the group of Klamath Union High school alumni, administrators, and community members who are taking school budget cuts into their own hand. They've established an endowment fund to raise money for school programs on the chopping block. Every school in the district will be covered by the groups efforts, not just Klamath Union. They're reaching out to alumni now for help in raising funds.
Local farmers help food pantries
Noonan Farms in Klamath Falls is part of an organized effort to provide food to pantries across southern Oregon. About 40,000 pounds of organic potatoes and 200 pounds of artisan cheese were distributed yesterday to six different food banks.
Area jobless rate improves
The unemployment rate for Klamath County in October showed some improvement. The jobless rate is 12.8 percent, down from 13 percent in September. Lake County's rate is 12.7 percent, which is also a drop from 13 percent. Klamath County's private sector lost 30 jobs, according to the Oregon Employment Department.

Oregon State police are part of the national Click it or Ticket campaign going on through Sunday. You'll see increased safety reminders on the roads this weekend, and extra enforcement efforts. Veterans to benefit from mobile dental clinic
Veterans in need of dental care will have easy access when a mobile dental van arrives in Klamath Falls December 2. The van will be able to handle cleanings, extractions, root canals, dentures and more, and it will be at the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. That's 2809 Avalon Street in Klamath Falls. It's first come, first serve beginning at 8am. You'll have to take proof of military service or Veteran's status.

Teachers in Klamath County are using a private donation website to help raise funds for school supplies. The tough budget climate has been no secret, and local teachers from both school districts in the county are hoping this can ease the burden and bring in much needed supplies.

Man jailed on charges including conspiracy
A man was sent to the Klamath County jail after being arrested Sunday night. 25-year old JD Callahan Cobb faces charges of criminal conspiracy, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault. Bail was set at $250,000.
Ice to blame in crash that injures La Pine woman
A La Pine woman continues to recover after a weekend traffic accident. 88-year old Florence Miller reportedly pulled out of her driveway in front of a vehicle driven by 58-year old Kenneth Wagner, who was driving east on Burgess Road. The icy roads compromised Wagner's ability to stop, according to the Deschutes County sheriff's office. The crash is still under investigation.

Mentor program is honored
The governor has picked a Klamath Falls group for an honor. Gov. Kitzhaber selected Citizens for Safe Schools' Kids in the Middle Mentoring Program as the 2011 Volunteer Program of the Year for Southern Oregon. The awards are given by the organization Oregon Volunteers, which promotes and supports AmeriCorps, volunteerism and civic engagement to strengthen Oregon communities
Highway 97 accident leaves one dead
An accident on HIghway 97 early Saturday morning about nine miles north of Klamath Falls killed a 47-year old man. State police say a pickup slid off the icy road into an adjacent irrigation canal. The driver was able to get out and flag down another car for help. While officers were investigating that accident they discovered Chevy Blazer upside down in the irrigation canal about 300 yards away from the original crash. Scottie Lane Peckham was the lone occupant, and was dead when officers got to him. He had been wearing a seat belt. The crash investigation continues.
Sentenced handed down after good samaritan is assaulted
24-year old Corey Lewis Hansen has been sentenced to ten years in prison for Kidnapping in the first degree and Robbery in the first degree. Hansen was one of two subjects who were arrested for assaulting David Brown, a member for the military who had attended the Air Show in Klamath County in late July. The case created public attention because Brown was allegedly attempting to help the individuals who assaulted and robbed him, according to DA Ed Caleb.

Search for Treasurer is still on
So far there have been five applications for Klamath County Treasurer after Mike Long's exit. Commissioner Al Switzer says the search continues. It's a part-time position that requires about ten hours a week.
Police investigate assault, one arrested
Police are still looking for a man accused of assaulting a 31-year old man in the Mills Addition neighborhood. 25-year old Eric Lee Kirk was lodged at the Klamath County jail in lieu of $55,000 bail. He was treated for a head laceration. Police say Kirk and another suspect visited a home on Applegate Avenue, and that's where the assault took place.
Switzer wants timber payments to continue
There could be big trouble if federal timber payments stop. Commissioner Al Switzer testified Thursday in Salem to the Legislature's Task Force on County Payments, and said the unions have been told to get ready for furloughs. Klamath County already reduced costs by cutting 32 positions in its sheriff's office and eliminating a jail pod last year. Switzer said a property tax levy probably wouldn't sit well with constituents, even if it helped with funding problems.
Local man sentenced for gun trafficking
A Klamath Falls man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in a gun trafficking case. 39-year old Sergio Saldivar Gutierrez was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm, after being caught transporting 11 handguns in August 2010 between Klamath Falls and White City. Investigators think the guns were on their way from Big R stores in Klamath Falls to Los Angeles. Nine guns recovered from crime scenes in LA have been linked to Gutierrez and two others.
Man sentenced for home invasion robbery
35-year old James Thomas Wozniak of Klamath Falls has been sentenced to ten years in prison for the home invasion robbery of a woman in September. District Attorney Ed Caleb's office says Wozniak entered the home of the female victim with his two accomplices, and terrorized the victim while stealing her property. Wozniak did accept his punishment without complaint and expressed what appeared to be a sincere apology to the victim in court.
Local gathering organized for Suicide Awareness Day
Saturday is suicide awareness day, and from 10am to 4pm there is an open house at the 9th Street Venue (the corner of 9th Street and Klamath Avenue). Mental health professionals will be available throughout that time to support those who may be dealing with thoughts of suicide, or who may have lost someone to suicide. The Klamath County medical examiner says in 2010 and 2011, 19 people died by suicide.

Woman sentenced for assault
32-year old Michelle Teresa Lifvendahl of Klamath Falls has been sentenced to 75 months in prison for second and third degree assault stemming from an incident in late September. The suspect and a male friend were accused of hitting a male victim with a bat on the Wing Watcher's Trail, according to Klamath Falls Police reports.

Christmas tree permits available beginning Monday
Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Fremont-Winema National Forest will go on sale Monday, and that will continue through December 23 at all Forest offices and several commercial outlets. Christmas tree permits cost $5 and are nonrefundable, and each permit lets you cut one tree. Cutting areas are located on Fremont-Winema National Forest’s lands in Klamath and Lake counties. In addition to the forest offices, you can pick up a permit in Klamath Falls at ISA Fuel on Washburn Way, Oregon Avenue Food Mart, and Parker's Rod and Gun Rack on 6th Street.

Noxious weed killer to blame for dying trees?
In August of last year, the Klamath County Public Works Department sprayed noxious weeds in a neighborhood about eight miles south of La Pine. Now KTVZ reports some residents are complaining that their Ponderosa pine trees are dying and the toxins are contaminating their drinking water. Oregon Department of Agriculture says they're very aware of the problem and have already collected foliage and soil samples. They'll await the test results before deciding what to do next.
Former Klamath County lawyer runs for Jackson DA
Jackson County prosecutor David Hoppe has announced his candidacy for Jackson County District Attorney. Hoppe has worked in the DA's office for 11 years. He served as a prosecutor for about a year and a half in Klamath County before that.
Van accident kills one
State police say a 15 passenger van registered to the Department of Veteran's Affairs was on its way Monday to the Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinic in White City from Klamath Falls. Volunteer driver Donald McCasland was taking passengers Daniel J Reiley and Ralph Kesling to White City it drifted onto the right shoulder and went over an embankment and into Lick Creek. Reiley was pronounced dead at the hospital. The crash is still under investigation.
Steel Center undergoes repairs
The main visitor center at Crater Lake National Park has some damage, and crews are working on $500,000 in emergency repairs. This damage is the result of a harsh winter last season, when the park was buried under about 650 inches of snow. There is major structural damage to the rafters at the Steel Center, and crews have been working to install new steel post braces and make other temporary repairs that can still be part of a long-term solution. Work should be finished soon.
Wolf reaches Jackson County
Where is that wolf headed? Evidently to Jackson County. This is the first wolf confirmed in southwest Oregon in 65 years, and satellite tracking systems found the the wolf in northeastern Jackson County on Sunday. The animal has been wandering since September 10th and has visited ten different counties, including Deschutes and Klamath. Biologists say there is a high likelihood that other wolves without collars have reached the Cascades, but there is no indication that this collared wolf is part of a traveling pack.
Man accused of assaulting a child
A Klamath County man faces charges after being accused of assaulting his girlfriend's one-year old child this summer. The mother told police she returned home to find the child crying with a bruise on the leg. 33-year old Michael Scott Vanhesteren has been charged with first-degree criminal mistreatment and third-degree assault. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Teen dies on Mount Shasta
A 19-year old man apparently tried to climb Mount Shasta wearing only a t-shirt and sweat pants and no shoes. Michael Falvo's body was discovered Sunday afternoon at 9600 feet by a California Highway Patrol helicopter. Falvo was reportedly participating in meditation ceremonies when he left the group to place a rock at the summit.
Ducks in National Championship picture
The Oregon Ducks are back in the national championship picture after Saturday's big win over Stanford. LSU and Oklahoma State, both unbeaten, have the top two spots locked down and are on a path to meet in the BCS title game if they can stay perfect. The Ducks are 4th, up from 7th last week. Alabama is ahead of the Ducks, in 3rd in the BCS Standings.
Accident sends one to the hospital with serious injuries
Oregon State police say a mini van was headed east on the Southside Bypass and a sedan was headed south on Homedale Road when the two vehicles collided late yesterday afternoon. The driver of the sedan was transported to Sky Lakes Medical Center with serious injuries. The other driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
Local family affected by fire seeks donations
Donations for the Hurst family, whose homes were severely damaged by fire last week, are being accepted at RJ's Appliances, Kevin Hurst's employer. Kevin's father Charles Hurst died Friday from injuries related to the fire. The family says it has nothing, and is waiting on an insurance claim before taking the next steps.

Man dies from injuries suffered in fire
The man who was rescued from a fire last week by his son has died. Charles Hurst was in the living room of the home at 5201 Old Midland Road when the fire broke out. His son Kevin entered the home twice to rescue his father, with the help of a neighbor who happened to be a volunteer fire fighter with Klamath County Fire District No. 4. An overheated porch light caused the blaze. Hurst died Friday at Sky Lakes Medical Center.

Blood Drive set for Wednesday

Keno gets clean water
Keno elementary students are no longer drinking bottled water. The drinking fountains haven't run in ten years after polluted well water forced the District to move to bottled water. But a $1.5 million project in Keno now has clean water flowing to the entire town.

Pelican Foundation to help City School programs
A group of Klamath Union High School alumni, school district administrators, and community members are doing what they can to ward off more budget cuts and bring back programs that have been cut. Things that have gotten the ax are elementary school track and field, junior high sports, high school auto mechanics, construction and culinary arts. The Pelican Foundation is contacting graduates to raise funds to establish an endowment organization.
Lakeview sends steer wrestler to National Finals Rodeo
Shawn Greenfield from Lakeview is the highest ranked Oregon steer wrestler coming into the National Finals Rodeo taking place in Las Vegas December 1 through 10. Oregon is sending three steer wrestlers, with Greenfield in fifth place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings with $79,622. This is his seventh qualification. The total purse this year tops $6 million in the National Finals Rodeo.
Property taxes paid by Tuesday receive discounts
Property owners have until the end of the year to appeal their value on their tax statements. But the first due date to pay in full and receive a 3% discount is tomorrow, November 15. You'll receive a 2% discount if paying 2/3 or no discount for 1/3 payment. Klamath County Assessor, Rafeal Hernandez, suggests property owners pay their taxes on the 15th of November even if they're appealing, to avoid paying interest. Not every change in market value leads to tax relief.

Cool Schools initiative helps local schools
Over $2 million in state funds will help local school districts with energy efficiency upgrades. Oregon's "Cool Schools" initiative, will help the two districts in Klamath County upgrade lighting systems and heating plus ventilation and air conditioning systems, and add ground source heat pumps. On Friday,$4.8 million was awarded to eight school districts. The Klamath County School District received the most money of the eight districts, $1.876 million. The Klamath Falls City Schools district received $400,000.
Mollie's gets new owner
The former Mollie's Restaurant and Lounge and fueling station on Highway 97 north of OIT has a new owner. Pilot Travel Centers has purchased it - four parcels of land for $600,000. The Klamath Falls City Council approved a related zoning change three months ago, and tentatively okayed a design change. More on the plans will be announced this week.
Three local men arrested after attending Occupy Portland
Three Klamath Falls men who had attended Occupy Portland demonstrations over the weekend were arrested in Marion County after a traffic stop. The vehicle was pulled over for speeding, and officers found gas masks, fireworks, and other possible explosive devices in the car. 21-year old Emery Nicholas Luff will be in court today facing the most serious charges. 21-year old William Maxwell Patterson and 20-year old Zachary Salzwedel-Kemp will be in court December 12th on related charges, plus possession of a controlled substance as marijuana was found in the vehicle.

Fifth candidate declares run for Sheriff
Frank Skrah has announced his candidacy for sheriff. Skrah worked at the Los Angeles police department for over 25 years. This is the fifth candidate, and that would make this field the larges since the May 2000 primary, the year Sheriff Tim Evinger was elected. Voters will choose a new sheriff in next May's primary.
Veterans Day parade to travel down Main
The Veterans Day Parade happens at 9:30 a.m. on Main Street from Spring Street to Veterans Memorial Park in Klamath Falls. An 11 a.m. by ceremony follows at the park, including a flag retirement ceremony. Also, expect a flyover from fighter jets at 11am as they make their way across the state.
Man arraigned on sexual charges
25-year old Josue Daniel Rodriguez has been arraigned in charges he had a sexual relationship with a girl under the age of 14. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. The District Attorney's office says the girl's mother became suspicious her daughter was having a sexual relationship with an older man, and reported it to police.
Sen. Merkley supports dam removal
Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Congressman Mike Thompson of California have introduced the Klamath Basin Economic Restoration Act in the Senate and House, which they say would create more than 4600 jobs, and restore fish and wildlife habitats. The plan calls for the removal of four dams on the Klamath River. Merkley said in the press release, the agreements that are in place represent the best way forward for the Klamath River Basin and its communities.
Historic site gets state money
A Klamath County site is getting financial help. The funds, ranging from $1,455 for a significant archaeological site to $8,000 to preserve the Bly Ranger Station in Klamath County are among the latest grants released by the State Historic Preservation Office. The State Historic Preservation Office says it likes to support projects that will stimulate the economy and improve livability.

Young ATV riders need safety course
The second phase of an ATV safety program is about to kick in. Phase 2 begins January 1, 2012, when riders on public lands under the age of 16 will have to complete both the on-line course and a "hands-on" training course designed for the type of ATV or off-road motorcycle they ride.

Local man joins House race
A Klamath Basin man has filed the papers to run in Oregon House District 56. Tracey Liskey is a farmer and small business owner who joins a growing field that includes Gail Whitsett, the wife of and chief of staff for state Sen. Doug Whitsett, and Greg Taylor, who is serving his first term on the Klamath Falls City Council. The primary election is May 15, 2012.
Flyovers planned for Veterans Day
The Oregon Air National Guard plans Veterans Day flyovers tomorrow. F-15 Eagle fighter jets from the 142nd Fighter Wing in Portland and the 173rd Fighter Wing at Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls are scheduled to conduct flyovers across the state, including the Klamath Falls Veterans Day Parade at 11am.

The Hurst family lost their home at 5102 Midland Road to a fire Monday night. RJs Appliances is taking donations to help the family. They're located at 421 Spring Street. EAS test fails in Oregon
Yesterday's nationwide EAS test failed to fire in Oregon. The test had been planned months in advance and was scheduled to happen yesterday at 11am. The test failed at Oregon Public Broadcasting headquarters, which is the statewide network for EAS messages from the White House. Engineers there are investigating what went wrong. Another test will be scheduled for next March or April.

Wolf confirmed near Upper Klamath Lake
A male wolf wearing a GPS collar has been located several times by satellite north of Upper Klamath Lake. Wildlife officials are hoping the endangered predators can repopulate the area, and ranchers are eyeing their property. This is the first wolf confirmed in southwest Oregon in 65 years.

Gems add to roster
The Klamath Falls Gems have announced the addition of six players to the 2012 roster, plus pitching coach Mitch Karraker, currently an assistant coach at the University of Oregon. New players include lefthanded pitchers Tyler Crawford and Xavier Borde of the University of Arizona, and and Tommy Thorpe of the Oregon Ducks. Also, outfielders Leo Sierra (Cumberland University), Jake Ringold (University of West Virginia) and Lewis Sebrell (Herkimer, NY, Junior College) have been added.
City sends reminder to remove snow and ice
The city of Klamath Falls reminds property owners about the responsibility to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to the property. Sidewalks shoud be cleared by noon each day, and throughout the day as necessary. Snow and ice can't be placed in the street or in gutters. If the city has to remove the snow and ice, it can charge the property owner and include an administration fee.

National EAS test planned for Wednesday
Tomorrow at 11am Pacific, the federal government will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. The test will last up to three and a half minutes, and it will interrupt regularly scheduled television, radio, cable, and satellite shows. The national Emergency Alert System can be activated by the president, if needed, to provide information to the American public during emergencies.
Tulelake Butte Valley Fair to hold public meeting
The Tulelake Butte Valley Fair was able to continue this year despite drastic budget cutbacks, thanks to public support. A regular monthly fair board meeting for the 10-A District Agricultural Association is coming up November 22 to discuss the future of the fair. On the agenda, consideration of eliminating the livestock exhibitor insurance requirement and where to set outside vendor commercial space fees. The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Fair Office in Tulelake.
Veteran's Court celebrates one year anniversary
Klamath County Veteran's Court celebrates its one year anniversary today with a ceremony at 1:30 in the court of Klamath County Circuit Court Judge Marci Adkisson. The ceremony will highlight the early success of the veterans court and emphasize community support. The celebration will honor Judge Adkisson for her commitment to oversee the court. The Veterans Affairs Office in White City will also be recognized for it's partnership.
Man pulled from fire
A man was rescued by his own son last night, after fire gutted his home on Old Midland Road. Charles Hurst was taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center for treatment. A neighbor was also treated for smoke inhalation. The neighbor, Dusty Turner, also happend to be a volunteer fire fighter with Klamath County Fire District #4, and helped Kevin Hurst rescue his father.
New Animal Shelter to hold sneak preview
The Klamath Animal Shelter will hold a sneak preview this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm to show progress at the future site. The new 18,000 square foot facility at 4240 Washburn Way opens soon and replaces the 5000 square foot Klamath Animal Shelter on Miller Island Road. The vision for the new space started in 2005, and $1.3 million later the debt-free facility is about to open with more exercise room for pets and comfortable accomodations for more animals.

South Valley Bancorp changes plans for IPO
Klamath Falls based -South Valley Bancorp Inc. has decided to shelve its plan for an initial public offering. The initial filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission happened in July, but in the most recent filing, the bank said "market conditions make proceeding with the offering unattractive." South Valley operates 24 branches, mostly across southern and rural Oregon. The bank hoped to raise $46 million through the offering.

Charter Communications to pay settlement to Klamath County
Klamath County has $22,459 coming to it after a settlement was reached with Charter Communications. The county hired a firm to look into the possibility that Charter underpaid franchise fees, and the numbers showed the fees were underpaid between April 2006 and March 2011. The city of Klamath Falls collects a similar fee, and has hired the same firm to investigate on its behalf.
Snowstorm leads to accidents
The first significant snowstorm of the season was not easy on vehicles. Between Saturday, and 6pm Sunday there were 35 accident reported in Klamath County. Fourteen of those accidents were on Highway 97. There were five on Highway 140 and three on Highway 39. Eight of the accidents included injuries.
VFW holds Poppy Drive this week
The VFW is asking for help during the annual Veteran's Day Poppy Drive. All money raised will help the VFW in its charitable programs throughout the coming year. There are openings for volunteers at Sherm's Thunderbird on Nov. 8th, 9th and 10th. In the last few years, the VFW Post 1383 has seen a decline as older members become less active and younger potential members don't show as much interest in joining. The Poppy Drive is not only to generate money, but also to generate interest, according to post 1383.

Winter weather expected
A weather system is expected to move into the Basin today that will drop daytime temperatures into the thirties and bring snow to the higher elevations. This is the first of three systems in the next week that will bring colder weather and the chance of snow. Three inches are possible on Saturday.

State Police release more on Tuesday night's fatal crash
Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal accident that had US 39 partially blocked last night between Klamath Falls and Merrill near milepost 6. An elderly California man was killed when his station wagon attempted to pass a commercial truck pulling two trailers. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck's driver, 22-year old Trevor Alves of Klamath Falls was not injured.
Local man faces numerous charges
33-year old Ryan Scott Davis of Klamath Falls has been arrested on charges of theft, burglary, eluding police in a vehicle and resisting arrest. The Klamath County Sheriff's Office says Davis has a criminal record that includes prior charges of assaulting a public safety officer, possession of methamphetamine and attempted kidnapping. The most recent charges include: First-degree burglary, first-degree theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, attempting to elude police officers, reckless driving, reckless endangering, first-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest. Davis is being held in the Klamath County Jail in lieu of $97,500 bail.
Police investigate vandalism
Police are investigating several incidents of vandalism beginning Halloween night. A total of eight reports of vandalism were taken by the Klamath Falls Police Department between midnight on Halloween night and 8 a.m. Tuesday. All but one of the incidents happened on East Main Street, between the intersection of East Main and Holly, and Mills Elementary School.

Two local athletes honored
Two local athletes are in the spotlight this week. 960 the Sports Legend and Charter Communications have announced the first-ever Charter Student Athletes of the Month for October. Klamath Union’s senior QB Alex Stork and Henley’s senior girls soccer player Jordin Scholer have been picked, and each receive a prize package and an invitation to appear on the Basin’s live, local sports talk show, Goofing Around at Lunch, on Friday.

Crater Lake National Park announces free weekend
Crater Lake National Park has a free entrance weekend coming up November 11 through 13. The National Parks Service picks several weekends each year at several different parks to give patrons a break.
Local photographer gets national opportunity
An honor for a local photographer. Klamath Falls photographer Mary Williams Hyde will serve as the official photographer for the second annual Western States Ranch Rodeo Association National Finals in Winnemucca, Nevada this weekend. The event runs Thursday through Sunday. .
Meeting today to discuss City Council Ward boundaries
The City of Klamath Falls will host a town hall meeting today at 5:15 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to discuss proposed adjustments to the City Council ward boundaries. The boundaries need to be adjusted because of population changes based on last year's census. The meeting will provide information about the rules regarding boundary adjustments and the process used by City staff to create the current proposal. Opinions are welcome and encouraged.
Gems release schedule
The Klamath Falls Gemshave announced the 2012 West Coast League and non-league schedule. The Gems will play 54 WCL games and add seven non-league games for the team's second season, including day games on Father's Day and July 4, 2012. The Gems open the season with the WCL West division rival Bend Elks on June 1, and complete the 2012 season with a six-game home stand against Bend and the 2011 WCL Champion Corvallis Knights.
